Kenya Peaberry Coffee - The Small but Mighty Coffee Bean

Pack of Kenya Peaberry CoffeeKenya Peaberry Coffee is known for its smooth, intense flavour, fine acidity, and well-rounded aroma. It is produced from coffee beans grown in the Nyeri region of Central Kenya, a mountainous area situated between the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya, Africa’s second highest peak. Coffee is one of the principal crops grown in the Nyeri region, mostly on smallholder farms. The lower temperatures here, along with rich, fertile soil and frequent rainfall, all help to create the perfect environment for coffee cultivation.

Peaberry coffee beans are also known as ‘caracoli’. They differ from regular coffee beans, being the result of a naturally occurring mutation within the coffee cherry. Normally two beans will grow in each cherry, and as they develop, one side of them flattens against the other; these are known as ‘flat berry’ beans for this reason. Peaberry beans, however, are formed when just a single bean grows in the coffee cherry, and these beans become more rounded in shape as they develop. They are only discovered when the coffee cherries are processed, and need to be sorted to separate them from flat berry beans before being roasted. Because they are small and round, peaberry beans roll and tumble easily in the roasting chamber, and tend to roast more evenly than other beans.

Only about five per cent of coffee beans harvested turn out to be peaberry beans, making them much in demand for the many coffee drinkers who have come to appreciate the wonderful complex flavours they possess. Some believe this may be because all the sweetness and juiciness of the coffee cherry is concentrated in one, rather than two beans. The end result produces a delightfully smooth and flavoursome cup, with a slight fruitiness, and clean, crisp aftertaste.
