Your guide to the sweet, smooth world of caramel coffee

If you’re searching for ways to mix up your coffee routine and enjoy a sweet, smooth and luxurious brew, look no further than our guide to caramel coffee below. We'll cover everything from how to make caramel coffee at home in your kitchen to the best coffee and caramel recipes to try.

What is caramel coffee?

Caramel flavoured coffee combines the sweet taste of caramel with the rich, aromatic flavours of coffee beans.

Although a popular choice in any coffee shop, there are many different ways you can make caramel flavoured coffee at home. Below we explore three main methods.

  1. Buy caramel flavoured coffee beans

By far, the easiest and most convenient way to make caramel coffee at home is to buy pre-flavoured coffee, such as Coffee Direct’s Caramel beans. This coffee is made by adding caramel flavouring to Arabica coffee beans after the roasting process and means you simply brew your coffee as usual to create a delicious caramel brew.

You can make your caramel coffee with any brewing method of choice, whether filter, bean-to-cup or cafetiere, then if you wish, add milk or a frothy top. Thanks to its naturally sweet flavours, there’s no need to add extra sugar, unless of course to suit your taste.

  2. Use pre-flavoured instant coffee

You can also use pre-flavoured instant coffee products to make caramel coffee. However, instant coffees tend to use Robusta coffee beans as a base for their flavoured creation. Robusta beans are generally slightly bitter, so you won’t get the same naturally sweet or smooth taste experience as you do with Arabica based drinks.

Instant coffees can be undoubtedly convenient if you’re in a hurry, but you’ll be limited in the types of brewing methods you can use to make your cup of coffee.

  3. Add caramel syrup to your regular coffee

You can also make caramel coffee by adding caramel syrup to any coffee of your choice.

A really simple recipe is to brew your coffee as you usually do and at the same time, boil some milk on the stove. Heat the milk until it’s bubbling, then simmer for three minutes. Next, add two teaspoons of brown sugar and one tablespooon of caramel sauce to your cup of coffee. To complete the recipe, add the hot milk and stir well.

Here are three of our favourites you should try at home:

Caramel Iced Coffee

Prep time: 5 minutes

Total time: 10-15 minutes (includes cooling time, essential for the perfect iced coffee)

Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 200ml hot brewed Caramel coffee
  • Brown sugar (optional)
  • A couple of ice cubes
  • 50ml cold milk
  • Caramel flavoured coffee syrup/ caramel sauce (optional garnish)
  • Whipped cream (optional garnish)
  • Cinnamon or nutmeg (optional garnish)

Recipe method:

Once you've brewed your Carmel coffee, add the sugar (optional) and stir well. Chill in the fridge until cold. Pour your cold coffee into your glass and top with milk. When you serve your iced coffee, add a couple of ice cubes per glass to your coffee milk mixture.

If you want a fancy garnish for your iced coffee, add whipped cream with a criss-cross drizzle of caramel syrup and a sprinkling of cinnamon and nutmeg.

Caramel Affogato

Prep time: 5 minute

Total time: 7 minutes

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

  • 200 ml coffee
  • Four or more scoops of ice-cream (Baileys, sea salt caramel or vanilla are excellent ingredients for this recipe)
  • Chocolate shavings, caramel sauce and/or sea salt (optional garnish)

Recipe method:

Brew an espresso-style coffee and while it's still hot, add to the scoops of ice cream. Sprinkle some chocolate shavings or caramel sauce on top for an extra luxurious finish. Some people also like to add a few large sea salt chunks for extra sharpness and texture.

Caramel Latte

Prep time: 5 minute

Total time: 10 minutes max

Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 250ml brewed coffee
  • 120ml milk
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Recipe method:

Mix the milk and brown sugar in a saucepan on medium heat. Heat your milk mixture for about 3 minutes until it gets frothy and starts to simmer. Lower the heat then whisk in the vanilla extract. To finish off your caramel latte, add your freshly brewed caramel coffee.

Coffee Direct's Caramel coffee

Our smooth and luxurious Caramel coffee is one of our most popular flavoured coffees. With a wonderfully rich aroma and subtle, sweet flavours, this mild coffee makes for the perfect after-dinner treat or hot brew on a winter's day.

We expertly roast our caramel flavoured coffee beans in small batches and also roast to order. This roasting process guarantees the optimum freshness of your coffee delivery so you'll always enjoy the fullest caramel flavour and aromas.

Our caramel beans are also available as whole bean or pre-ground coffee, so you can use your favourite brewing method to create your cup of caramel flavoured coffee. For ground coffee options, we’ll send you the exact grind size you require. We do not recommend the use of our flavoured coffees in Bean-to-Cup coffee machines, as some built-in grinders may struggle with the oil-based flavourings used. Manual grinders are generally better suited to these varieties.

“Lovely subtle aromas of caramel as you drink this superbly smooth coffee.”

Keith W. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“I've tried quite a few different brands in the past, but this one is the best. Not bitter and doesn't leave a strange aftertaste like some others. The aroma is amazing, and the taste is spot on.”

FAQs

What does caramel coffee taste like?

Caramel coffee combines the rich, sweet flavours of caramel with the smooth and naturally sweet flavours of coffee.

How do you make homemade caramel sauce from scratch?

You’ll find lots of easy homemade caramel syrup recipes with a quick Google search. Most homemade caramel recipes will ask you to mix sugar, water, corn syrup, vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.

Does caramel latte have coffee?

Yes. A caramel latte is made with either flavoured beans, hot milk and foam or, black coffee, caramel syrup, hot milk and foam. If you're seriously craving a caramel latte but don't want a caffeine buzz, you can always use decaffeinated coffee beans instead.

Is caramel coffee ok to drink for vegetarians and vegans?

Yes. As long as you avoid any milk or cream products (switching in plant-based alternatives such as almond milk), Coffee Direct's Caramel beans are suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.

Is caramel flavoured coffee bad for weight loss?

It depends on what type of caramel flavour product you go for. Our Caramel coffee contains the same calories per serving as regular coffee and with its sweet flavours, requires no additional sugar. As long as you watch how much milk you add, it's perfectly diet-friendly.

However, when syrup is used to give a caramel flavour to coffee, your drink will have higher sugar content. Therefore, like any food, these drinks should be consumed in moderation if you're on a weight loss plan. Any caramel coffee recipe such as lattes will tend to be more calorific, so should be seen as a treat, rather than go-to brew.

Where can I buy caramel flavour coffee?

You can buy speciality Caramel flavour coffee on our site. Free shipping is available for any delivery over £20. UK delivery of smaller orders will use Royal Mail's delivery services. If you ever have a problem with your delivery, our customer service team will get in touch ASAP.
