Coffee beans from Costa Rica are considered to be some of the world’s finest, producing coffees that are light to medium-bodied, clean and sweet, with rich, well-balanced flavours. Coffee is cultivated in different areas of this beautiful country, each with its own microclimate, resulting in beans with a diverse assortment of unique qualities and flavour characteristics.

Costa Rica is a country of Central America, popular with tourists for being a safe and peaceful destination, with so much to see and do. Many are attracted to the laid-back feel of the place and the relaxed and carefree attitude to life that Costa Ricans are known for. There’s a saying, ‘Pura Vida’, commonly heard in Costa Rica that means ‘pure life’ or ‘simple life’, and this sentiment may be at the heart of why Costa Rica is said to be one of the happiest countries in the world, with people living longer and healthier lives compared to other countries. The fact the coffee there tastes so good can only add to this happy state of affairs!

Coffee has been grown in Costa Rica since the 18th century, from Arabica beans introduced from Ethiopia. After the country gained independence from Spain in the early 19th century, government incentives, in the form of free land and coffee seeds, were introduced to encourage coffee farming in an effort to boost the economy. For many years coffee was Costa Rica’s only export, and its production was influential in the construction of railway systems and other facilities in the development of the country’s infrastructure. Today, coffee is grown on small and medium-sized farms, in regions of the Central Valley, Tarrazu, the West Valley, Tres Rios, Brunca, Guanacaste, Turrialba and Orosi.

Coffee-Direct has two amazing Costa Rican coffees for you to try that exemplify the high quality and character of Costa Rican coffee beans:
